Choosing Driving Lessons Wisely

Driving lessons generally cost somewhere between 15 and 25 ponds per hour - and for that money you want to make sure that you get some good value for your money - continuing to pay that sort of money when you aren't learning much is an expense that anyone can do without.

Here is a bit of advice about what to look for from a driving instructor and what to make sure is included in your driving lessons that could help to keep your costs down and your learning up!

What to Seek from an Instructor

Although new instructors may be 'fresh' with the latest requirements of the driving test, an instructor who has many years of experience is likely to have encountered many more pupils with different learning styles - one of which may be best suited to you.

Pass rates can be important. Although there are exceptions, it is likely that an instructor with a higher pass rate will be the best suited to get you through the test.

Grade? The DSA grade driving instructors on the quality of their tuition - the reliability of their system is questioned by most instructors on forums etc, but it should give you a reasonably good basic idea.

What to Ensure the Lessons Include

Although you don't just want to 'learn the testing routes', it can be helpful, in the latter driving lessons, to become familiar with at least parts of the testing routes.

Ensure you have covered all the main possible aspects of the driving test - 3 point turn (now called the 'turn in the road'), reversing around a corner, emergency stop, parallel parking, bay parking, starting off on a slope, driving on a dual carriageway where available, maybe a one way system, etc.

Do at least 1 'mock test', this should not only help to build confidence that you can actually do it, but should familiarise you with what to expect on the day.
